Live Fire Training and NFPA 1403

Live fire training is inherently dangerous, particularly when conducted in acquired structures.  Fire service agencies conducting live fire training, regardless of the type of structure, should strictly adhere to the requirements of NFPA 1403: Standard on Live Fire Training Evolutions, 2002 edition. As part of NFPA's commitment to enhancing public safety through the adoption and enforcement of key safety codes and standards, the Association has made NFPA 1403 available for online review.  By following the link below you can view all sections of the document for reference.  However, there are no print, copy, or save options.  All agencies conducting live fire training are encouraged to purchase or borrow a copy of the document so that it is available for planning purposes.

In addition to NFPA 1403, the NH Department of Environmental Services (DES) has regulations that pertain to firefighter instruction and training burns.  In particular:

  • A state certified fire instructor must directly supervise all firefighter instruction and training activities.

  • DES must be notified in writing at least 10 days prior to the training burn with a description of the training activities, and statements that all asbestos and harmful materials have been removed from the structure.

Additional information can be found at the DES website; http://www.des.state.nh.us/ard/openburningregulations.htm
