Training Opportunities for Municipal Officials

The New Hampshire Local Government Center has a long tradition of training local officials through seminars and educational programs offered throughout the year. Events Calendar

Programs include:

  • Annual fall municipal law lecture series

Each fall, a series of three lectures are held regionally in six areas of the state. Attorneys and other professionals present lectures and answer questions on a variety of issues. The Series is very popular among members of zoning boards, planning boards, public works directors and road agents, as well as administrators and planning officials.

  • Annual local officials workshops

Each spring, LGC offers day-long workshops for local officials in several locations throughout the state. The workshops, presented by LGC's experienced legal staff, incorporate the latest information on the roles and duties of various local officials. Two levels of instruction are offered at three different locations across the state: a Basics course covers topics on finding the law, state-municipal relationship, town meeting, role of the selectmen, the budget process, Right to Know Law and streets and highways; an Advanced session focuses on welfare, taxation, liability, employment and conflicts of interest.

  • Annual budget and finance workshop

Each fall, LGC offers a day-long workshop for local officials covering the principles of the Municipal Budget Law. Presented by LGC's experienced legal staff and other presenters, the workshop also highlights timely municipal finance topics. Attendees receive an updated edition of The Basic Law of Town, Village and School District Budgeting.

  • Annual training for town meeting and school district meeting moderators

The Town Meeting and School Meeting Workshop is held biennially in February. Town and School Moderators start the day by developing an understanding of the basic rules governing their position and any changes that may affect how they perform their role at the town meeting or during an upcoming election. Seasoned moderators share their experiences and answer questions from attendees to round out the half-day program.

  • Annual conference and exhibition

The LGC Annual Conference and Exhibition is held each November for a period of three days. The conference offers informative workshops and seminars for every aspect of local government. Over 100 exhibitors showcase new equipment and services for communities. Attended by hundreds of local government officials and municipal employees, the event provides an unparalleled opportunity for sharing information and ideas to improve service provision.

  • Issue-specific training programs by special request

LGC staff will conduct issue-specific training for Member municipalities upon request. Recent presentations include topics such as the Right to Know Law and preventing fraud.
